Crafting a Unique Wooden Puzzle: From an Adult's Vision to a Child's Delight (Part 1 of a series)

Image
Creating a child's puzzle using 12 different species of wood is a remarkable and artistic endeavor that results in a truly unique and educational toy. Each piece, crafted from a distinct type of wood, brings its own natural color and texture to the puzzle, eliminating the need for artificial stains or paints. This approach not only adds a visual appeal but also introduces young minds to the diverse world of wood and the beauty of nature. Using a variety of wood species allows for a multisensory experience. Children can feel the differences in as they handle each piece and observe the contrasting colors and grain patterns. This tactile exploration enhances their sensory development and encourages an early appreciation for the natural world. Furthermore, creating a wooden puzzle from different wood species can be a valuable learning tool. It offers an opportunity to teach children about different types of trees, their growth patterns, and the unique characteristics of each wood. This...

The True Meaning of Christmas: The Birth of Jesus Christ

Image
In the midst of twinkling lights, festive decorations, and the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations, it's easy to lose sight of the real reason we celebrate Christmas. It's a season of profound significance, a time to reflect on the birth of Jesus Christ, as beautifully narrated in Matthew 1:18-25. A Divine Promise Fulfilled In these verses, we're reminded of the miraculous fulfillment of a divine promise. Mary, a young and virtuous woman, was chosen to bear the Son of God. Joseph, her betrothed, faced an astonishing truth: his beloved Mary was carrying a child conceived by the Holy Spirit. It was a moment that demanded immense faith and trust. The Name Immanuel: "God With Us" As Joseph grappled with this revelation, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. The angel reassured Joseph, saying, "She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus because he will save his people from their sins." (Matthew 1:21) This name, Jesus...

Crafting Love: Wooden Nativities as Cherished Gifts

Image
As the festive season approaches, many of us are searching for that perfect gift – one that embodies the true spirit of Christmas, a token of love and remembrance. It's in this spirit that I discovered the joy of crafting wooden nativities as gifts for my friends and loved ones. Every Christmas, the story of the birth of Jesus, as told in Luke 2:8-21, fills our hearts with warmth and reminds us of the true meaning of the season. It's a story of humility and love, and it inspired me to embark on a heartfelt journey of woodworking. My very first wooden nativity was simple, hand-carved from a block of pine. With a few basic tools and a heart brimming with the Christmas spirit, I brought to life the holy scene: the humble stable, the Joseph, Mary and of course the babe in the manger... Jesus. I also made the shepherds and the guiding star. It was far from perfect, but it was made with love. As the years went by, my passion for crafting wooden nativities grew. I delved into the art ...

Giving Thanks with Hearts and Hands: A 2024 Thanksgiving Message for Scroll Saw Artists

Image
As we approach the season of Thanksgiving in 2024, there's a unique warmth that fills the hearts of scroll saw artists. Our craft, much like the spirit of this holiday, involves patience, creativity, and the steady rhythm of hands at work. It's a season for us to not only celebrate our artistry but also to reflect on the blessings that enrich our lives. Pattern and image by Steve Good As scroll saw artists, we find inspiration in the grain of the wood, the hum of our tools, and the intricate designs that come to life under our skilled hands. This Thanksgiving, let's extend our appreciation beyond our craft. Let's take a moment to be mindful of the blessings that surround us—our families, friends, and the joy of creating art. Thanksgiving is a time to gather around tables stocked with delicious food, but it's also a time to gather in our hearts the moments and memories that truly matter. It's about the laughter shared during long hours in the workshop, the satisf...

Leaving a Legacy of Love and Woodworking: A Poppy's Gift

Image
Recently, my cousin surprised me with a collection of carving knives and gouges, belonging to Uncle Ronny, my mother's brother. My cousin, after sharing images of some of my woodworking creations with him, expressed his deep joy in witnessing a family tradition endure. At 90 years old, struggling with declining eyesight and unable to continue his own carving, he graciously offered to pass on his cherished tools to me. Image: Two of my Uncle Ronny's unfinished carvings, and a carving knife he made. Above Image: Two carvings my Uncle Ronny did Above Image: Uncle Ronny's carved "Self-Portrait" I will cherish these tools, and continue the tradition. Every family has its traditions, its unique way of passing down wisdom, and cherished memories through the generations. In our family, that tradition will be built from love and the hands of a grandfather known as "Poppy."  Taking on the moniker of my grandfather... "Poppy"... I reflect on my life, and ...

The history and meaning of Welsh Love Spoons

Image
The history of Welsh Love Spoons is steeped in romantic folklore and tradition. Dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries, young men in Wales would meticulously carve wooden spoons by hand as tokens of love and devotion for their beloveds. These intricate spoons were not only expressions of affection but also a showcase of the carver's skill and craftsmanship. The spoons often featured symbolic motifs such as hearts, locks, and knots, each carrying a hidden meaning. Passed down through generations, Welsh Love Spoons have become a cherished part of Welsh cultural heritage, embodying the enduring power of love.   Welsh Love Spoons are not just beautifully crafted wooden utensils; they are infused with layers of symbolic meaning. Each carved element on the spoon carries a message of love and commitment. For example, a heart signifies love, a lock represents security, and a horseshoe symbolizes good luck. Crafting Heartfelt Gifts for a Precious New Arrival

Image
Welcoming a newborn into the world is a joyous occasion, and when it's a co-worker's bundle of joy, the excitement doubles. To celebrate the birth of my co-worker's son, who is now two months old, I decided to put my scroll sawing skills to use and create something truly special: a wooden rattle and a pair of charming "animal" toy cars – an alligator and a turtle. There's something magical about the soft sound of a rattle, captivating a baby's attention and filling the room with innocent giggles. With my scroll saw, I shaped a wooden rattle, then profiled the edges using my sanders ensuring it was smooth and safe for tiny hands to hold and cherish.  When he is a bit older, and to spark his imagination and introduce him to the wonders of the animal kingdom, I crafted two delightful "animal" toy cars – a friendly alligator and an adorable turtle. Hopefully, they will become irresistible playtime companions for my co-worker's son. In the busy wo...

Learning how to create Welsh Love Spoons

Learning how to create Welsh Love Spoons requires a blend of patience, precision, and a touch of artistic flair. First and foremost, a steady hand and an eye for detail are essential. Intarsia Artists Struggle to Say Goodbye to Wooden Children: Experts Recommend Hugging Your Art Before Giving it Away!

Image
As an intarsia artist, parting with your artwork can be as difficult as saying goodbye to a beloved pet. You spend countless hours cutting, shaping, and sanding each piece of wood, and as you work, you develop an intimate relationship with each individual piece. It's like getting to know a new friend, except instead of asking them about their hobbies and interests, you're examining the grain and texture of their wooden fibers. And just like with a friend, it can be hard to say goodbye when it's time to part ways. When the finished artwork is finally ready to be handed over to its new owner, it feels like you're giving away a piece of yourself. You've invested so much time and energy into creating this beautiful piece, and now it's time to let it go and hope that it will be appreciated and loved just as much as you loved creating it.

Life is for the birds, and so is my art!

Image
As many of you readers have noticed, I recently discovered a new addition to my woodworking hobby called intarsia, and I've been having a hoot creating bird art ever since.  The following images are in progress, shown during the dry fit stage before shaping is complete. If you're not familiar with intarsia, it's a technique where you use different pieces of wood to create a three-dimensional image. It's like a jigsaw puzzle, but with more sawdust and fewer pieces. The varied species of wood create the textures, patterns, and color pallet.  One of the things I love about Intarsia is that you can create incredibly detailed pieces without being an expert woodworker. It's all about choosing the right colors and pieces of wood and letting your creativity fly. I've made everything from owls to toucans, and each one has its own unique personality. But let me tell you, creating bird art with intarsia isn't always a walk in the park. I've had my fair share of fow...

From Wooden Hearts to Intarsia Art: A Journey of a High School Valentine's Gift

Image
Recently, Tara sent me a photo of the wooden gift I made for her back in High School over 40 years ago.  I think we were sort of boyfriend/ girlfriend back then.  I was 17 1/2, she was a sophomore at 15 y/o.  But for sure, I couldn't help but laugh at the thought of my teenage self. A painted red pair of hearts cut out of wood? And did you notice, it was NOT my note on the backside.  I didn't even sign it, or put anything on the back.  Yeah, uncouth and an amateur at "love". But as I was looking at the hearts... man, I had a steady hand!  Most likely done on the HS shop bandsaw. Maybe lacking a bit of creativity, but a solid cut! :-) But that burn line!!! Barf-o-matic! Seriously? A teen's attempt at "love"? Really? Was that the best I could come up with for Valentine's Day? I mean, I was no Michelangelo, but surely I could have done better. Not even my handwriting on the back... Man was I a dummy back then. But then, as I looked at the photo, another...

"From Poppy's Hands to Little One's Heart: Crafting a Wooden Toy Car for My Grandson!"

Image
As a grandparent, there's nothing quite like creating something special for your grandchild. For me, that special item was a wooden toy car for my 8-week-old grandson. I chose to use a scroll saw for its precision and ease of use. I wanted the toy car to be safe and easy to hold for my young grandson, so I made sure to sand it down until it was smooth to the touch. The end result was a handcrafted wooden toy car that I hope he will cherish for years to come. Creating something with your own hands is a wonderful way to show your love and affection, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to create something special for my grandson.

Rainbows in a Box: The Importance of Bright Colors in Children's Toys

Image
My wife has been focusing on buying toys for our grandson.  She has been getting a lot of "Lovevery" products as well as  Montessori toys.  Since she is in the know, I have been trying to model the toys I create after them, yet not copy them.   Most of my work thus far has been finished in "natural" colors, I have held on to a couple of my puzzles, thinking I want to go BRIGHT. This weekend, I completed another dinosaur puzzle, this one VERY bright. I have researched a bit, and although I still prefer natural wood finish, I am going to pump up the color volume on a few more projects. I later decided to cut out a backer frame to hold the puzzle as a quick finish project today. I made it from 1/4-inch Alder. I scrolled the perimeter of the puzzle for the top, then glued a 1/4-inch backer board.  Stained and viola... Below is an earlier puzzle I created for my daughter's friend who is about to have a baby... Named Noah! Bright colors are an important aspect of...
