The Art of Scroll Sawing: Preparing and Tensioning Your Blade - Video Blog

As I sit at my saw in Poppy's Workshop, I have been thinking about ways to spread some of the knowledge I have gained over the years, and over each piece I produce. As I scroll, I am always thinking about ways to improve my craft.  In this blog post, I will discuss a few things to do BEFORE putting blade to wood.

To achieve precision and control in your scroll saw projects, it's essential to properly prepare and tension your blade. In this post and video below, I'll guide you through these crucial steps to ensure a successful scroll sawing experience.

Preparing the Blade:

  • Select the Right Blade: The first step in scroll sawing is choosing the right blade for your project. The blade's type, size, and teeth per inch (TPI) should align with the material and level of detail you intend to work on.
  • Scuffing the Blade: To ensure that your blade securely holds in the chuck, scuff the top and bottom of the blade using sandpaper or a sharpening stone. This creates a rough texture that improves the grip, preventing the blade from slipping during operation.
  • Filing the Edges: Filing the edges on the back of the blade is another essential step. Again sandpaper mounted on a stick or a sharpening stone is all that you need. It makes the blade more maneuverable, allowing for tight turns and intricate cuts. Smooth, rounded edges reduce the risk of splintering and help maintain control.

Tensioning the Blade:

  • Install the Blade: Before tensioning, insert the blade into the scroll saw's upper and lower blade holders, ensuring that the teeth are pointing down.
  • Tensioning Adjustment: Scroll saws typically have a tensioning knob or lever. Begin by releasing the tension on the blade if previously used. Then, follow the manufacturer's instructions to apply the appropriate tension. Over-tensioning can lead to premature blade wear and breakage, while insufficient tension may cause the blade to wander or cut inaccurately.
  • Check Tension with a Ping Test: After setting the tension, lightly pluck the blade like a guitar string. A properly tensioned blade will produce a distinct "ping" sound. If it sounds dull or lacks resonance, adjust the tension accordingly.
  • Alignment and Tracking: Ensure that the blade runs true within the blade holders, aligning with the upper and lower guide bearings. Proper tracking prevents the blade from twisting or drifting while cutting.
  • Test Cut: Perform a test cut on a scrap piece of material to confirm that the blade is cutting accurately and cleanly. Adjust the tension or blade alignment if necessary.

Remember that blade tensioning is a balance between securing the blade firmly and preventing it from breaking due to excessive strain. Regularly check and adjust the tension as needed throughout your project to maintain optimal performance.

By properly preparing and tensioning your scroll saw blade, you'll be well on your way to creating intricate and beautiful scroll saw projects with precision and control. These steps are the foundation of successful scroll sawing and will help you unlock your creativity in this captivating woodworking art.
